Lori Tharps,
Kinky Gazpacho
On Friday, April 18th, Lori Tharps will
read from her latest book, Kinky Gazpacho. Lori is a freelance
journalist and coauthor of Hair Story: Untangling the
Roots of Black Hair in America who traveled to the south
of Spain - the homeland of Lori's future in-laws. The
story of this amazing journey is humurous, heartfelt,
and insightful. Read below for more about Kinky Gazpacho:
Kinky Gazpacho: Life,
Love & Spain celebrates the mysticism
of travel and the joys of watching two distinct cultures
connect and come together. It is a memoir, a travel essay
and a love story. Against the ancient backdrops of Cádiz
and Andalucía, Lori starts the intricate yet amusing
journey of rekindling her love affair with Spain and becoming
a part of her new Spanish family. From a grandmother who
spies on her to a grandfather who warmly welcomes her
to town with a slew of racist jokes, the close-knit clan
isn't exactly waiting with open arms. Kinky Gazpacho
tells the story of the redeeming power of love and finding
self in the most unexpected places.

Marcus Reeves,
Somebody Scream!
If you know anything about hip hop,
you know that it is wide-spread and most often misunderstood.
Many books have explored this growing industry and the
artists at the fore front; however, none like Marcus Reeves',
who has covered youth culture and politics for over fifteen
years, in publications such as The Washington Post, The
New York Times, The Village Voice, Rolling Stone, Vibe,
and The Source. Somebody Scream! is the title
of Marcus Reeves' first book project that explores hip-hop
music and its politics. Marcus will be appearing
at Brownstone Books, Thursday, April 24th to read and
sign this highly anticipated narrative. More about Somebody
Scream!:
Looking at ten artists that have impacted rap—from
Run-DMC (Black Pop in a B-Boy Stance) to Eminem (Vanilla
Nice)—and puts their music and celebrity in a larger
socio-political context. In doing so, he tells the story
of hip hop's rise from New York-based musical form to
commercial music revolution to unifying expression for
a post-black power generation.
