Camp Half-Blood, Brooklyn

Brownstone Books Literary Summer Camp is offered to children ages 7-13. For our 2011 Session we will conduct two sessions of Camp Half-Blood: June 27th through July 1st and July 11th through July 15th. This fun-filled camp brings Greek mythology to life through physically engaging, historical and educational activities. Each session pulls its theme from a different storyline in Greek literature and immerses the camper into the world of Percy Jackson and other popular works. Using reenactments, story telling, expeditions, and arts n’ crafts campers work with their friends to develop new skills, solve problems and create summer memories that will last a life time.

The oracle sat with her back to the hill, a breeze riffling the ruby scarves tied to her folding camp chair. One by one, the 12 boys approached. They stood straight as the oracle lowered her sunglasses and looked them over. Sorting through a pile of paper slips with burnt edges, the oracle, a middle-aged woman, selected one for each child.

“I will prophesize your quest,” she told Tom Leier, 9, before reciting a mysterious poem that would guide him for the week ahead. That morning, the boys had been regular Brooklyn elementary school students at a summer camp in Prospect Park. But now each had been revealed to be a half-blood, with one mortal parent and one who was a god of Greek myth. Read more here.

At Brownstone Books' Camp Half-Blood in Brooklyn, the campers' adventures come right out of Greek mythology. Based in nearby Prospect Park — with its wooded paths, groves of trees and classical-looking buildings — the camp is protected by the Golden Fleece, which looks a lot like a yellow T-shirt. Campers give offerings to the gods before they eat. There are daily quests and even prophesies that sometimes pop up on counselors' cell phones.

On one summer day, a group is battling it out with swords made from foam and masking tape and shields they had designed themselves. Counselor Jason McConnell explains the rules of engagement.

"Let's say Georgia slashes Jai's leg — he's gotta go on one leg," McConnell says. A hit on the neck or head is "a kill." To read more, click here.
